7 Engineering Facts The Engineering Students in India Would Like to Know

Engineering or B. Tech is a hot study and career option today in India. More and more students are opting for a B. Tech degree and want to make their career in the various fields of engineering.   • There are around 40 different branches of B. Tech on offer in India. Out of these branches, only six branches are chosen by 80% of B. Tech graduates in India, namely: Computer Science, Mechanical and Automation, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, Civil, and Chemical.

  • IIT Delhi has a hall named Dogra Hall, which looks like a ship in design; IIT Roorkee has the highest internet speed in the country, which is almost six times the national average; IIT Kanpur has its own airstrip where the aeronautical students are trained; and, IIT Madras has the highest number of patents filed by the B. Tech students in India.

  • Usually Electronics and Communication is confused with the Electrical Engineering branch. Though both deal with core physics, they are quite different from each other. The former deal with communication and signal systems, while the latter deals with the development of electrical systems.

  • The world’s largest IT and technology hub, and the home to the world’s top-most tech companies such as Google, Facebook, and Microsoft, the Silicon Valley, has about one-third Indian engineers out of the total engineers working there. Moreover, out of the total startups in Silicon Valley, about 16% startups have an Indian co-founder.

  • The cumulative FDI inflows in the engineering sector in India have become more than three times in the last six years. The cumulative FDI inflows in the sector in FY10 were $8.9 billion, while in FY16 this amount reached to a huge $28.22 billion.
